‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Soars Past ‘Titanic’ At The U.S. Box Office

Top Gun: Maverick continues to fly high at the box office, as it has officially surpassed Titanic to become the seventh-highest grossing movie in the U.S with US$662 million in ticket sales.

The earnings on Box Office Mojo have put the Tom Cruise-led sequel ahead of James Cameron’s romance drama by more than US$3 million, and is now positioned behind Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, which has racked up a total of US$678 million.

This is the newest accolade to join the fighter jet flick’s series of milestones, including its overtaking of Marvel’s Avengers, and becoming Tom Cruise’s biggest box office hit ever. Outside of the U.S., however, Titanic is still in the lead with a combined US$2.2 billion worldwide.

It has been a remarkably impressive run for Top Gun: Maverick, especially in a year dominated by superhero movies. The use of exhilarating aerial stunts and lack of CGI effects is a fresh breath of air from bombastic action, which has led to superhero fatigue with Marvel Phase 4 titles such as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder.

The film sees the return of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell back in the pilot’s seat, as he heads back to the Top Gun school for one last mission. It has garnered critical acclaim at launch, even prompting a super fan in Singapore to catch it 45 times in 45 days. Starring alongside Cruise are Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Ed Harris, Danny Ramirez, Manny Jacinto, and Greg Tarzan Davis.
