Co-CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran, has revealed his thoughts on what many refer to today as “superhero fatigue”, the notion which suggests that audiences are tired of the barrage of superhero films nowadays, leading to recent block offices failures. According to Safran, audiences aren’t tired of superhero movies in general, just boring ones, explaining that he is confident that they won’t feel the same way about the upcoming Supergirl, as it is “something cool and original”.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Safran said that superhero fatigue was never a thing, and that it was just “mediocre movie fatigue”, stating that today’s audiences demand something fresher when it comes to films of the genre, something that Supergirl will provide.
“I never felt that there was superhero fatigue. I felt it was mediocre movie fatigue,” Safran said. “You gotta try something new. You have to change the game a little bit. The essential story on which Supergirl is based is something cool and original and we haven’t seen before.”
As the second film in James Gunn and Safran’s rebooted DC Universe after 2025’s Superman, Supergirl will shift the spotlight to Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El, with the film directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Other cast members include David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, respectively.
Inspired by Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic, Woman of Tomorrow, although previous comments made by Gunn said it would not follow its plot beat-by-beat, Supergirl sees Kara form an unlikely alliance with Jason Momoa‘s antihero Lobo to face off against Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) when Krypto gets poisoned.
Supergirl soars to cinemas on 26 June 2026, with the film’s official synopsis reading, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”
