Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon has signed on to play the villain Victoria Kord in DC’s ‘Blue Beetle‘ movie, replacing Academy Award-winning actress Sharon Stone, who was previously in talks to play the role.

Sarandon joins a cast that includes Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña as the titular character, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo and Damián Alcázar. Raoul Max Trujillo plays another villain, Carapax the Indestructible Man.

While Victoria Kord is a new character created for the film, she does share the same last name as Ted Kord, who is the second Blue Beetle in the DC comic books. The movie focuses on Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes, who is the third Blue Beetle. Nothing more is known about Victoria Kord so far.

Blue Beetle follows Jaime Reyes, a Mexican-American living in El Paso that discovers an alien scarab called Blue Beetle. The extraterrestrial attaches to his spine, granting him armour that enhances his speed and strength, as well as the ability to create weapons, shields and wings.

The Blue Beetle movie will be Susan Sarandon’s first appearance in a superhero movie, though she did previously voice Black Widow in the podcast series Marvel’s Wastelanders. The Award-winning actress is known for her many roles in films and TV shows, including Thelma and Louise, The Client, Atlantic City, and Dead Man Walking. She most recently starred in Tyan Murphy’s Feud as Bette Davis for which she received an Emmy Awards nomination.

Blue Beetle is directed by Angel Manuel Soto, with screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, and it opens in theatres on 18 August 2023.
