Studio Mir’s ‘Devil May Cry’ Animated Series Lands Second Season On Netflix

Watch out, demons, Dante is back for another hunt, as Studio Mir’s animated video game adaptation Devil May Cry has secured a second season on Netflix just one week after the premiere of its first chapter on 3 April. Let’s rock, baby!

This news comes via a post on Netflix’s social media channels, with a poster image accompanied by the words: “Let’s dance. Devil May Cry is officially coming back for Season 2″. Although this early announcement doesn’t provide any new details of season two’s plot or characters, the series does have a wealth of source material to tap into, considering its first season barely covered the game’s hefty lore.

Season 2’s existence shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as its creator Adi Shankar previously told IGN that he had planned a “multi-season arc” for the show. In addition, season one did kick off to a great start, raking in around 5.3 million views within the first four days of its release, according to Netflix. These numbers propelled it to fourth place on the platform’s charts for the week of 31 March, just shy of the emergency room procedural drama Pulse, which sat at 6.5 million views. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series has also reached Netflix’s top 10 in 87 countries.

Beyond viewership stats, the series has performed similarly well among critics and fans, currently sitting at a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, outscoring other massive recent releases like The Last of Us (94%) and Daredevil: Born Again (88%).

Based on Capcom’s fantasy action-adventure game franchise Devil May Cry, which has steadily gained popularity over the years with five mainline titles since its debut in 2001, the series’ success comes despite featuring major differences compared to the games, such as its heavy emphasis on political themes, a fully original main villain and a very different version of one of its supporting characters, Lady.

No release window has been announced yet for Devil May Cry’s second season, but the show would no doubt expand upon its inspired lore introduced in seasons one, with its logline reading: “Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”
