‘Spy x Family’ Infiltrates Hollywood With Ingenious ‘Mission: Impossible’ Collaboration

The Forger family sure is going places. Hot on the heels of a Street Fighter 6 collaboration, Spy x Family has joined forces with yet another big player (this time from Hollywood), and it’s none other than Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

As part of the promotional efforts for the movie in Japan, the classic poster for Tom Cruise’s upcoming adventure was reimagined with characters from the highly-popular anime series. Taking the place of Ethan Hunt (played by Cruise) is Loid, while Yor stands in for Hayley Atwell’s new character. In addition to Bond and Anya, it also features other familiar faces like Yuri, Franky, the Handler, and Agent Nightfall, who are placed in the same spot as their live-action counterparts.

Rounding out the announcement is a trailer that opens with animated sequences from WIT Studio, the animation studio for Spy x Family. In it, Loid asks Anya and Yor if they would like to watch a spy movie (referring, of course, to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One), both of whom excitedly responds. Anya then turns on the television, and the scene cuts to the official trailer for the latter, with Loid explaining the basics of the Mission: Impossible franchise in the background, while thinking about the similarities between himself and Ethan.

The crossover is a pleasant surprise that doesn’t only work well, but kills two birds with one stone by marketing both films at the same time. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will first hit theatres on 13 July, before Spy x Family Code: White debuts on 22 December in Japan.

“Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most,” reads the synopsis for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Spy x Family Code: White x Mission Impossible

Spy x Family Code: White, meanwhile, marks the anime’s first theatrical adaptation. It features an all-new original story following the Forger family as they go on a winter vacation of sorts, only for Anya to trigger a string of events that may threaten world peace after an accidental discovery. Series creator Tatsuya Endō, serving as supervisor, is credited with the original work and original character designs for the movie.
