Sony’s Spider-Man Spinoff Film, Kraven The Hunter, Finds Director

Hot on the heels of the news of Olivia Wilde’s new female-centric superhero movie, it seems we will be getting another film set in Sony’s Spider-Man universe.

According to Deadline, Sony is currently in talks with J.C. Chandor, the director behind Netflix’s Triple Frontier, to direct a film centered around one of the webhead’s most formidable foes: Kraven the Hunter

With the addition of this new film, Sony is continuing to build a healthy slate of films featuring famous Spider-Man characters, with films including Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius which stars Jared Leto, as well as the recently announced Madame Web movie.

Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad will produce the film, with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penning the script.

Kraven the Hunter, otherwise known as Sergei Kravinoff, is a big game hunter who first made his comic book debut in 1964. Since then, has been tormenting our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man ever since. The villain is also one of the original members of the Sinister Six team of villains in the Spider-Man comics. Though he has yet to make an appearance in a feature-length film, Kraven has appeared in video games and an animated series.

The prospect of Tom Holland’s Spidey squaring off against Kraven will no doubt entice many longtime fans of the series, who have been clamouring for the iconic villain to make his live-action debut. After the successes of the likes of Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio (and potentially Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan/Scorpion), anything is just about possible for Sony Pictures for the wall-crawler’s expansive Rogues’ Gallery at this point.

Though even if or when the deal with J.C. Chandor is closed, we imagine the film will take a while to appear on the silver screen, with the production of a number of films put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regardless, at least we have yet another film set in the Spider-Man universe to look forward to.
