Seth Rogen Trashes 1993 ‘Super Mario Bros’ Movie, Calls It ‘Worst Film Ever Made’

The Super Mario Bros. are hitting the big screens once again, and this time, in a much better movie. At least, that’s what star Seth Rogen believes.

Rogen voices Donkey Kong in Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This movie is the second movie to center the popular Nintendo game. The first was a 1993 live-action adaptation directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel.

“When I was 11, I saw the original Mario Bros. movie and I was so excited. But it’s one of the worst films ever made. I was so disappointed. I think it made me realize that movies, like, could be bad. That never occurred to me until that moment,” said Rogen. “It really bummed me out.”

The 1993 movie starred Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. The film bombed with critics and at the box office. The latest Universal movie, however, has seen polarising reviews from critics but has been receiving a fair amount of love from gamers for its nostalgic value, countless Easter eggs and similarities to the games.

“It’s nice to vindicate that moment. It’s nice to know that 11-year-olds out there that they won’t be disappointed in the same way that I was,” said Rogen of the new movie. “It’s nice because when you’re doing a voice, you just get to focus on coming up with jokes that maybe children will laugh at.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is lead by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as Mario and Luigi respectively. Joining Rogen in the cast is Jack Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Micheal Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Khary Payton as Penguin King and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now showing in cinemas. Don’t forget to stay behind for two post-credits scenes.
