Sequel To India Hit Film ‘RRR’ Is In Very Early Development Says Director

Indian actioner RRR took the world by storm when it stormed into the mainstream scene with a whirlwind of action choreography, pyrotechnics and VFX, but director S.S. Rajamouli isn’t quite done just yet.

Variety has confirmed that a story for the sequel is currently in the works, with the filmmaker’s father, V. Vijayendra Prasad returning as screenwriter. “My father is the story writer for all my films. We discussed a bit about [RRR 2] and he’s working on the story,” said Rajamouli during a screening in Chicago.

As the project is in its very early stages, there aren’t any additional details to go on. This announcement comes after N.T. Rama Rao Jr (known NTR Jr.), who plays Komaram Bheem in the film, entertained the possibility of a follow-up back in April this year.

“I’ve used the word franchise thinking, hoping that there would be another world of RRR again,” said the actor. “Sometimes [if] you just hope and you say a few words hoping it would happen, it will happen. It’s just a way of positive thinking, wanting for more.”

RRR was released in March 2022 and has since become a surprise hit in a market dominated by Bollywood titles. The Telugu-language historical fiction epic is one of the most expensive movies ever made out of India, and follows real-life 1920s Indian freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) in their fight against a common enemy: the British. One of the standout moments involves Bheem unleashing tigers, leopards, and other wild animals from a truck to attack them, making up only a piece of excitement that the movie’s end-to-end action sequences offer.
