Sega Calls ‘Crazy Taxi’ Reboot A “Triple-A” Game

Strap on your seat belts, Crazy Taxi fans — Sega is putting the pedal to the metal for its upcoming reboot of the arcade classic, calling it a “triple-A game“.

First revealed in a sizzle reel during The Game Awards 2023, it joins other legacy franchises like Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage in getting a revival. Not much else is known about the title, but an article by the Japan Times hints at big ambitions and budgeting.

“We’re responsible for titles such as Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis and Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage! in cooperation with the bases in Tokyo and overseas. We are also participating in the development of triple-A titles, including Crazy Taxi,” said Takaya Segawa, president of Sega’s support studio in Sapporo.

“At present, we don’t have any titles developed independently by the studio, but we intend to do so in the future.”

It should be noted that while ‘triple-A’ is traditionally defined by big budgets, big production values, and big everything else, the term has become more of a buzzword in recent years. As such, the description doesn’t necessarily mean anything, although it’s assuring to know that Sega is putting in the resources to develop a proper Crazy Taxi reboot.

Sega Crazy Taxi Reboot

In Crazy Taxi, players control a taxi driver who speeds through the city to drop passengers off at their destinations, performing stunts along the way to score points. The console version of the game debuted in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast and proved to be a hit, spawning ports for other platforms including PlayStation 2, Nintendo Gamecube, and PC, as well as sequels and spinoffs. Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller, released in 2002, was the last mainline entry in the series.
