‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Anime Reunites Film Cast Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, And More

The band is back in business with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Netflix’s anime adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series. Following an earlier announcement in March this year, the streamer has now dropped a first look at the upcoming series, and it’s looking plenty glorious.

The eight-episode show is helmed by animation studio Science Saru of Devilman Crybaby and Star Wars: Visions fame, inheriting its stylish flair. It follows Edgar Wright’s 2010 action rom-com Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which adapted Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, and will reunite the main cast of the movie, including Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Ramona Flowers), Kieran Culkin (Wallace Wells), Chris Evans (Lucas Lee), and Brie Larson (“Envy” Adams).

Additionally, Anamanaguchi, the chiptune band behind the soundtrack of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World video game, is contributing new music to the series. Wright and O’Malley return as executive producers alongside BenDavid Grabsinki (Are You Afraid of the Dark), Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Siegel, Michael Bacall, Nira Park and Eunyoung Choi, with O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski also serving as showrunners.

“It’s hilarious. It’s emotional. It’s visually stunning. The action scenes will blow your mind. And there might be a few surprises along the way,” said O’Malley of the anime back in March.

The trailer, with its bold, striking aesthetics, does paint a very promising image. What’s more delightful, though, is how it included various visuals of the movies and graphic novels as well, such as Scott’s arm block against Matthew Patel’s flying attack and the rehearsal space of his band, Sex Bob-Omb.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off hits Netflix on 17 November.
