‘Barbie’ Surpasses ‘The Dark Knight’, Rises As Warner Bros’ Highest Grossing Domestic Release

This Barbie has broken yet another record.

The Greta Gerwig-directed movie has crossed US$537.5 million at the domestic box office, overtaking Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (US$536 million) and taking its title as the highest-grossing domestic release in Warner Bros. history.

This news comes after the movie crossed US$1 billion in an impressive 17 days, establishing Gerwig as the first female director to achieve that milestone. When Barbie was released, it set the weekend box office record as the biggest domestic opening weekend ever for a film directed by a woman too.

At this rate, Barbie will possibly surpass Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie (US$574 million) as the biggest domestic release of 2023. Standing at US$1.2 billion right now, Barbie also has a shot of surpassing The Super Mario Bros Movie (US$1.35 billion) as the higestest-grossing worldwide release of the year too.

Barbie continues to make history so it’s no surprise that Mattel wants to assemble a Barbie Cinematic Universe and make movies out of other popular toy franchises.

Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular character and her man-friend Ken. It also stars Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt and more. Read our review here.
