Scarlett Johansson Is ‘Done’ With Marvel; Gwyneth Paltrow Open To Returning

Scarlett Johansson is officially retiring as Black Widow.

The 38-year-old actress hopped on fellow Marvel star Gwyneth Paltrow’s podcast, The goop Podcast, to talk about her Marvel days, her marriages, her skincare business and other topics pertaining to her life. Of which, Johansson makes it clear that she will not be returning to the role of Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff in the future, or ever.

“I’m done,” said Johansson. “Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”

Johnasson made her debut as Black Widow in 2010’s Iron Man 2 and played the character across eight Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films including The AvengersCaptain America: The Winter SoldierAvengers: Age of UltronCaptain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity WarCaptain Marvel (in a cameo), Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow

Black Widow died in Endgame and then reappeared in a solo movie that served as a prequel to the events leading up to her death. Now that Marvel is expanding their multiverse, fans have been hoping to see Johansson once more but the actress is ready to put this chapter behind her.

“Yeah, it was awesome. It was like the best time ever. I mean, doing Avengers was so much fun. I was 26 years old, I was single, it was fun! You know… I didn’t have any responsibility to anybody but to just enjoy yourself,” shared Johansson.

“And then every couple of years, we would go back, and do it again, and all be in different places in our lives. Like, somebody would have a kid, or was getting married, or divorced, or remarried, or whatever. And it was like, I don’t know, an adult summer camp thing. And it was cool. It was really, really some of the best experiences.”

Paltrow, on the other hand, is keen to return to the superhero universe should Marvel President Kevin Feige ever call her up.

“I think so. I mean, I didn’t die so they can always ask me,” Paltrow said. “A 64-year-old Pepper Potts? How great.”

Johansson joins Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in Marvel retirement, leaving Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo as the last men standing from the original cast of Avengers.
