Paramount’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Locks March 2027 Release

Riding on the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount has scheduled a 19 March 2027 release date for its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, giving fans only two years before witnessing Amy Rose and Metal Sonic come to life on the big screen.

With its production previously announced even before the third film’s release, a report by Variety now reveals its confirmed release date, which comes as no surprise considering the massive success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the highest-grossing entry in the series that garnered US$422 million at the global box office.

Sonic the Hedgehog Mysterious Character Potential Sequel

Although plot details of the upcoming movie still remain under wraps, Sonic the Hedgehog franchise director Jeff Fowler has revealed more information on the future of the series during an interview with Polygon, specifically what it holds for the two new characters introduced during the mid-credits scene of the third movie, Amy Rose and Metal Sonic.

“We actually had the idea pretty early, during storyboarding,” Fowler explained, “[we wanted] to honour how they were both introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog CD. So it felt very cool to honour that chronology and have them simultaneously introduced.”

“We never want to feel like we’re making the same movie. It’s always got to take us into new territory tonally, and offer up something new, and give people a reason that they have to get out and see it,” he added, explaining the team’s goals to ensure that both characters brought their own unique flavours to the upcoming movie, while still keeping in line with the movies’ themes.

When asked about the potential actors to voice the character, Fowler stated that although Metal Sonic is known for being voiceless in the games, the team has not ruled out the possibility of giving him a voice for the movie. Amy, on the other hand, already has a point of reference for her likeness in the games, but due to her initial introduction in the film, Fowler explained that the team had “some different story needs”, and was thus unable to rely solely on her portrayal in the games.

In any case, fans will just have to wait and see how Sonic the Hedgehog 4 shapes up when it hits theatres on 19 March 2027.
