‘Mortal Kombat II’ Trailer Pits An Unwilling Johnny Cage In A Battle For Earthrealm

The wait is almost over, as with Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat II steadily approaching its new release date of 8 May 2026, the sequel has received a new trailer to show off more bloody carnage that fans can expect.

Unlike the 2021’s Mortal Kombat, which featured an original narrative and main character, Cole Young (Lewis Tan), the sequel will actually focus on the titular Mortal Kombat tournament this time around. In addition, our leading hero this time around is none other than Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) of video game franchise fame, a washed-up actor who is recruited by Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) to join the fight.

From the trailer, it seems like the sequel will have an overall narrative similar to that of the games, which featured a universe where conquest was not done using massive armies, but instead via a martial arts tournament. Control was determined by the victor, and numerous realms would send their best fighters into combat to secure their freedom, notably Earthrealm, Netherrealm, Outworld, Seido, the Realm of Chaos, and Edenia.

Mortal Kombat II looks to focus on the battle for control between Earthrealm and Outworld, with the villainous Emperor Shao Kahn (Marytn Ford), who hails from the latter, seemingly winning over control in a flashback sequence, meaning it’s up to Cage and the gang to defeat him in battle and secure Earthrealm’s freedom. The trailer not only packs in some familiar sequences, such as Kitana’s (Adeline Rudolph) Fan-Nado finisher seen in the previous trailer, but also new ones, like Scorpion’s (Hiroyuki Sanada) iconic Fire Breath fatality. Some characters thought to have died in the first movie will also make a comeback, such as Kung Lao (Max Huang) and Kano (Josh Lawson).

Returning to helm the sequel is director Simon McQuoid, who also serves as producer alongside James Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, and E. Bennett Walsh. Mortal Kombat II’s cast will also include Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and CJ Bloomfield as Baraka.

Mortal Kombat II will begin the fight for Earthrealm on 8 May 2026.
