Live-Action ‘Street Fighter’ Movie Pulled From Sony’s 2026 Release Slate

It’s not a K.O. yet, but things have reached a standstill for Legendary Entertainment and Capcom’s planned live-action adaptation of Street Fighter. A week after fielding relative newcomer Kitao Sakurai as its director, the film is no longer on Sony Pictures’ 2026 release calendar, possibly pointing to a creative overhaul behind the scenes.

There’s no word on its fate, but the project will be co-developed and co-produced with Capcom if eventually rescheduled. It was originally slated to debut on 20 March 2026, with filmmakers Danny and Michael Pilippou (Talk to Me) attached to a previous iteration. The cast wasn’t announced then, and no other details, including a logline or plot specifics, were shared.

In another change to its slate, Legendary also shifted the release of Tommy Wirkola’s forthcoming shark thriller from 1 August 2025 to 3 July 2026. The feature, now titled Shiver instead of Beneath the Storm, is produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick and stars Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton, Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Day One, Constantine).

The Street Fighter franchise kicked off in 1987 as an arcade fighting game and would go on to spin-offs, crossovers, and six more mainline titles, with its latest numbered entry being 2023’s Street Fighter 6. A feature adaptation of the same name starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as M. Bison, and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li debuted in 1994.

20th Century Fox took another stab at bringing the brawling action to the big screen with 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, but both went down in history as critical and commercial flops — although the former managed to attain cult status over the year.

Perhaps the third time’s the charm?
