LEGO 40516 ‘Everyone Is Awesome’ Set With 11 Monochrome Minifigures Leaked Ahead Of Pride Month

In recent years, LEGO has been releasing a number of eye-catching sets from the Botanic Collection to F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and even the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery. Now, the Danish toymaker is releasing an LGBTQIA+ set titled ‘Everyone Is Awesome’.

LEGO will be dropping the LEGO 40516 ‘Everyone is Awesome’ set that consists of 346 pieces with 11 monochrome minifigures. The colours chosen are to reflect the original pride rainbow flag, along with pale blue, white and pink to represent the trans community. Black and brown are to acknowledge the diversity of skin tones within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Each minifigure fashions a hairstyle of their own and no specific genders have been assigned to the figures to “express individuality while remaining ambiguous”. Set designer Matthew Ashton hopes that the set will send out a message of inclusivity to the LEGO audience.

“Growing up as an LGBTQ+ kid – being told what I should play with, how I should walk, how I should talk, what I should wear – the message I always got was that somehow I was ‘wrong’,” said Ashton (via Guardian). “Trying to be someone I wasn’t was exhausting. I wish, as a kid, I had looked at the world and thought: ‘This is going to be OK, there’s a place for me’. I wish I’d seen an inclusive statement that said ‘everyone is awesome’.”

This set is the first of its kind that the company will be releasing, and has been sought after by AFOLs (Adult Fan of LEGO).

“This set means a lot,” said Flynn DeMarco, a member of the LGBTQIA+ AFOL community and a contestant on the television show Lego Masters US. “People look to a company such as Lego – a company they love and enjoy – and think, ‘Hey if it’s OK for Lego, maybe it’s OK for me, too.’”

LEGO has confirmed a release date of 1 June 2021, with several sources pointing to a US$34.99 price tag, an amount that is totally worth it since it includes 11 monochrome minifigures.
