John Cena In Talks For James Gunn’s Suicide Squad Sequel

It seems like noted professional wrestler and former WWE champion John Cena might finally be making his superhero movie debut.

According to Variety, the self-dubbed “Doctor of Thuganomics” is in talks to join the likes of Idris Elba and Margot Robbie in James Gunn’s upcoming Suicide Squad sequel.

Robbie will be returning to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, while Jai Courtney will be back as Captain Boomerang. It is still unknown who Cena and Elba will be playing, as the studio has decided to have Elba play a brand new character. Instead of letting him take on the role of Deadshot, a character previously portrayed by Will Smith.

Despite being panned by critics for its muddled plot and thinly written characters, receiving an approval rating of only 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, the original Suicide Squad still became a box office sensation when it got released in 2016, grossing over US$746.8 million worldwide.

The Suicide Squad sequel might be the first comic-book role that Cena will be taking up, but it will not be his first foray into acting. Cena most recently starred in Universal’s Blockers as well as the 2018 Transformers spinoff Bumblebee starring Hailee Steinfeld.

He has also been tapped on by fellow WWE wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson to play as a spy in The Janson Detective.

The Suicide Squad sequel is expected to hit theatres on August 6, 2021.
