Jodie Comer Faces Danger In Chilling ‘28 Years Later’ Still

28 Years Later has already cemented its place as one of 2025’s most eagerly anticipated films. With less than six months to its release, promotional efforts have ramped up, offering fans glimpses of what to expect. Empire Magazine recently unveiled a striking image from the film, featuring Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) as Isla and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) as Dr. Kelson. The shot depicts Isla standing in a foreboding Bone Temple, with Dr. Kelson looming behind her, holding a flickering candle. The haunting atmosphere mirrors the intensity seen in the first trailer and pays homage to the unsettling tone of Danny Boyle’s original 28 Days Later.

Jodie Comer Faces Danger In Chilling ‘28 Years Later’ Still

Directed by Boyle, 28 Years Later takes place nearly three decades after the Rage Virus decimated Britain. The Bone Temple, a mysterious structure introduced in the film, plays a crucial role and is expected to feature prominently in the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, slated for release on 16 January 2026, with Alex Garland (Civil War) penning the script and Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) stepping in as director.

Comer described her experience filming as both thrilling and physically demanding. “The stunt performers playing the infected didn’t hold back,” she told Empire. “The thing about our stunt performers playing the infected is they really don’t take the speed off for you. They chase you. There were so many moments where I felt like I was actually running for my life!” She also praised Boyle’s directorial style, recounting how he relished creating an authentic sense of terror. “He said, ‘Because you just have to go there. You can’t fake it. You have to really go there in order for the audience to be with you.’

Fiennes’ portrayal of Dr. Kelson, a rugged survivor with a cryptic backstory, has sparked intrigue. “He’s a survivor, and the way he survived is very interesting. He’s quite out-there in his views on the world,” Fiennes hinted to Empire. “I think audiences will assume something about him and then see where it goes. [He’ll be] a much bigger part of the next one.” While the Bone Temple’s origins remain unclear, theories suggest it could belong to a cult revering the infected or a dark entity.

Boyle has confirmed that Isla and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character, Jamie, are married and embark on a rite-of-passage journey with their son, Spike. Their mission takes a dangerous turn, drawing them deeper into the virus-ravaged mainland. Despite Isla’s limited presence in the trailer, Comer’s acting prowess in past projects like Killing Eve and The Last Duel ensures her character will leave a lasting impact.

The absence of Cillian Murphy, who played Jim in 28 Days Later, has disappointed fans. Although Murphy remains involved as a producer, his lack of on-screen presence slightly dampened the film’s buzz. However, Boyle has reassured audiences that 28 Years Later will be the first instalment of a new trilogy, where Murphy could potentially return as Jim.

28 Years Later will open in cinemas on 20 June 2025.
