Horror Master Mike Flanagan To Direct “Radical New Take” Exorcist Film

Mike Flanagan, known for his work on The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, will write, direct, and produce the next Exorcist film, which will be a significant departure from what fans of the franchise are used to.

Flanagan’s entry into the franchise also confirms that the planned sequels to The Exorcist: Believer were cancelled after the 2023 film failed to meet expectations at the box office and The Exorcist: Deceiver was pulled off the release lineup.

Flanagan has worked with Blumhouse in the past on Oculus, Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil, and returns to work on his dream project, saying, “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

CEO Jason Blum also expressed his support for Flanagan, saying that “voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans,” and teasing a “radical new take” for the franchise, and that he “can’t wait for audiences to experience it.”

Can Mike Flanagan resurrect the next Exorcist film? It’ll be a hauntingly good time.
