‘The Exorcist: Believer’ Summons US$45M At The Global Box Office

The Exorcist: Believer is having some trouble making movie-goers a believer.

The reboot and sequel to the legacy horror film The Exorcist opened over the weekend with US$45.1 million at the global box office.

Despite debuting less than expected, the movie managed to summon the No.1 spot at the domestic box office with US$27.2 million, putting it somewhere in the middle between recent horror releases like Saw X (US$18.3 million) and The Nun 2 (US$32.6 million).

Overseas, The Exorcist: Believer made a total of US$17.9 million. Leading sales were Mexico with US$4 million, followed by the UK with US$2.1 million and Italy with US$1.2 million.

Other international markets possessed by the R21 horror flick were Spain (US$966K), Germany (US$938K), Indonesia (US$881K), India (US$655K) and Malaysia (US$488K).

The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green, the man behind the Halloween franchise reboot with Jamie Lee Curtis. The movie takes place 50 years after the original 1973 classic and brings back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil.

In The Exorcist: Believer, teenagers Angela and Katherine show signs of demonic possessions after getting lost in the woods. Together, they unleash a horrific chain of events, similar to what MacNeil’s child went through decades ago.
