HBO Doubles Down On ‘Game of Thrones’ With Another Targaryen Spin-Off In Development

HBO continues to expand its Game of Thrones universe, developing multiple spin-offs that could further explore the history of Westeros. While House of the Dragon remains the flagship prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to introduce a different perspective with a more intimate story, focusing on a knight and his squire during a period when dragons no longer exist. However, discussions around additional projects suggest that at least one more series centered on the Targaryen lineage is showing promise.

HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, hinted at a significant development within the expanding universe, revealing that one Targaryen-focused spinoff is in a strong position. “We have other spinoffs that we’re working on right now, one of which — which I won’t get into — is very promising, and it is still the Targaryen line,” she shared in an interview with Deadline. “There’s a number of other spin-offs, we can’t really guarantee what’s going to go forward.” While details remain scarce, speculation points to a long-rumoured series about Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, a pivotal moment in the history of the Seven Kingdoms that took place centuries before the events of Game of Thrones.

The notion of bringing Aegon’s story to the screen is not new, with screenwriter Mattson Tomlin reportedly developing the project alongside George R.R. Martin. The story of Aegon’s rise to power, his unification of the Seven Kingdoms, and the establishment of House Targaryen as the ruling dynasty offers a rich narrative that aligns with HBO’s existing strategy. If this project moves forward, it could become the next major prequel to take over once House of the Dragon concludes, which is expected to happen after its fourth season.

While House of the Dragon continues to explore the internal conflicts within House Targaryen, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms presents a different kind of storytelling. Orsi confirmed that the first season will debut later this year and hinted at a multi-season plan. “You’re going to be so impressed by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell as Dunk and Egg, the two leads, the sort of brotherhood, the paternal nature between Dunk and this young man,” she said. “So much so that we’re already planning on how do we build this for the three seasons in total. We’re not picking it up officially, but it’s looking very good. We’re looking at it as a holistic piece, Seasons 2 and 3, because there’s three novellas.”

Unlike its predecessors, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have a more grounded approach, with Orsi describing it as “intimate” compared to the large-scale battles and dragon warfare seen in House of the Dragon. While the mainline prequel continues to showcase elaborate conflicts like the Battle of the Gullet, this new series shifts the focus to character-driven storytelling. “You know what, it was worth the wait,” Orsi said about the upcoming battle. “I was just on set and saw all the elements and what was behind it. I’m so glad we waited because it’s going to be better than ever, and I don’t think we had the time at that point to do what it is that we’ve achieved now this season.”

While no official confirmation has been given regarding the timeline for these additional projects, House of the Dragon season three is expected to arrive in 2026, ensuring that the Targaryen legacy remains central to HBO’s long-term plans. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will introduce a new side of Westeros later this year, with further updates on future Game of Thrones spin-offs expected as production schedules evolve.
