Hayley Atwell Says Peggy Carter Cameo In ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel Was “Frustrating”

Superheroes have their good and bad moments, and for Peggy Carter, one of her worst times was in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel star Hayley Atwell has expressed surprise over her character cameo appearance in the sequel to Doctor Strange, finding it a “frustrating moment.”

“I’m like, ‘That wasn’t my choice!'” Atwell said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “When she was like, ‘I could do this all day,’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently, you can’t, so egg on your face.’ That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”

In the movie, Carter met a tragic end when she was sliced in half by her shield during a fight with Scarlet Witch. The aftermath resulted in several members of the Illuminati meeting their demise, which did little justice to their appearances and ended up being wasted potential. As a result of her short screen time, Atwell shared that her voice role on the Disney+ series What If…? ended up being more satisfactory.

“I felt like I had much more to do in the What If…? animation series,” she said. “I mean, any actor will tell you, to be able to go into a booth in effectively your pajamas and do an animation is great fun because you’re focused on the voice as the instrument and your main performative tool.”

The 41-year-old made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Peggy in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, before headlining ABC’s Agent Carter series from 2015 to 2016. The character would later reunite with Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame.

Moving on from the MCU, Atwell stars alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which hit theatres on 12 July.
