‘God of War Ragnarök’ Celebrates Franchise 20th Anniversary With Free Cosmetic DLC

In celebration of God of War’s 20th anniversary, Sony and franchise developer Santa Monica Studio have announced the Dark Odyssey collection for God of War Ragnarök, a free update arriving this week that includes character, armour and weapon skins inspired by past games in the series.

As detailed by an official PlayStation Blog post, the update will arrive on 20 March at no additional cost, and will be available for all players who own the game on the PlayStation and PC. The Dark Odyssey collection includes a set of black-and-gold-themed looks for Kratos, Atreus and Freya, alongside gold-tinted weapon and shield skins.

Perhaps its most notable addition is the Dark Odyssey appearance for Kratos, which features a dark skintone alongside gold tattoos and solid white eyes, inspired by a costume that originally appeared in 2007’s God of War II as a reward for completing the game on God Mode, the second hardest difficulty setting in the game, with the Dark Odyssey name itself also being inspired by the working title of the first God of War game.

Players will be able to claim the cosmetic goodies once the update drops from any Lost Items chest in the base game, or automatically via its Valhalla roguelike mode. Apart from the free items, the patch will also finally bring a transmorg system to the game, albeit in a limited capacity, adding an ‘Edit Appearance’ feature for weapon and shield attachments and allowing for visual customisation while retaining abilities and stats.

Apart from the Dark Odyssey collection, Sony is also celebrating the franchise with a range of other activities and goodies throughout the month. These include a 20th Anniversary Fan Kit for social media, Steam and the PlayStation Network, an upcoming art exhibition in collaboration with Gallery Nucleus in Los Angeles, California, a 13-disc Limited Edition vinyl set, various game-themed merch and sales for both God of War Ragnarök and its 2018 predecessor God of War.

God of War Ragnarök’s Dark Odyssey collection will launch on 20 March 2025 as a free update for the PS4, PS5 and PC.
