First released in 1981, Captain Tsubasa is a sports manga created by Takahashi Youichi and tells the story of Oozora Tsubasa, an 11-year old elementary school student who fell in love with football and dreams of one day winning the FIFA World Cup for Japan.
Since its release, the series has remained incredibly popular, with numerous sequels, film and TV adaptations made since. With its immense popularity, it did not take long for games based on the series to be mada, with the first released in 1988 for the NES.
The latest game in the franchise is Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions which is based on the remade anime. It will be released for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on 28 August 2020. According to the game’s producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki, Rise of New Champions will feature a mix of arcade football and soccer games which will allow players to experience super plays in real-time.
