‘Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’ Drops Story Expansion DLC As Devs Focus On Part 3

Well, it seems like we won’t be getting any major Final Fantasy VII Rebirth story DLC, kupo. The Square Enix team has shifted their priorities away from creating expansions to the current title, instead focusing on pushing out the third part of the remake trilogy.

Via an interview with the Daily Star, game director Naoki Hamaguchi pointed out that the title will not be receiving an intermediary chapter between the second and third game in the trilogy like Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Intermission DLC chapter.

“We definitely do hear the desire from fans, the voices out there that want that kind of thing,” he explained, “I understand it completely, but I think, from my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible.”

“So that’s why we’ve decided not to focus the development resources on creating additional extra episodes for DLC at the moment. We really are putting all our efforts into getting the third game out as quickly as we can. So for the moment, that’s where we’re focusing our time.”

This new revelation might be slightly disappointing for fans, especially since rumours of a story DLC had been circulating due to a previous comment made by Hamaguchi on exploring “further expansions” to the addictive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth minigame Queen’s Blood, but at least they can rest easy with the fact that the team is hard at work on developing the next chapter in the trilogy.

Despite the unfortunate news, it has to be noted that Hamaguchi seemed to be specifically referring to extra story episodes, so smaller content updates might still be in the cards, including a potential Queen’s Blood-focused DLC, although this is all speculation for now.

It is also currently unknown when exactly fans can expect the third part of the trilogy, but judging from the fact that Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth were four years apart, and the latter was only released this year, it seems there’s still a long way to go before the game finally releases, with Square Enix previously stating that it hoped to release the finale by 2027.
