Strap in, buckle up, and fast-10 your seat belts, as the Fast X ride just got longer and quite possibly, wilder.
Speaking at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, franchise star Vin Diesel announced that the movie is now being split into two installments, with Part 2 slated to race into theatres sometime in 2025.
“This summer is only the beginning of Fast X,” Diesel said to those in attendance. “And with all of your effort and with all of your love and the fact that you are a part of our family, Fast X will continue. And after this explosive summer, I will have the privilege of coming to you for Part 2 in 2025.”
The news comes after an earlier report that Louis Leterrier will return to the director’s seat for the next entry in the Fast and Furious franchise. Back then, the lack of story details and a very brief description — a “companion film” to Fast X — seemed to paint the project as Fast & Furious 11. In light of Diesel’s most recent announcement, everything is now a lot clearer.
“Fast is now the longest franchise in motion picture history… with the same actors playing the same characters,” he continued. “This is our family, the audience is our family, and as we were building towards this achievement we attracted directors who brought their own magic to the saga… I’m proud to say for nearly two decades the Fast films have been the most successful film of every one of our directors.”
Fast X is expected to wrap up the Fast & Furious franchise along with the 11th movie, which currently has no release date. The upcoming entry was to be originally helmed by veteran franchise director Justin Lin, who later left the team due to creative differences. Leterrier took over the reins quickly to join a team that features producer-star Diesel as series protagonist Dominic Toretto, as well as a legacy cast comprising Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, and Charlize Theron.
The 10th title in the fan favorite series will speed into theatres on 19 May. It follows Dom and his family as they square up against a new foe: a “very sadistic and androgynous” villain named Dante Reyes, played by Aquaman star Jason Momoa. Captain Marvel‘s Brie Larson is also a new face, stepping into the role of an agent who teams up with Dom.
