It looks like Evil Dead Rise has risen to the occasion. The horror movie, directed by Lee Cronin, has scared up US$41.3 million globally on its opening weekend.

Of the US$41.3 million, US$24.5 million were domestic earnings. The remaining US$16.8 million were from international markets.

Evil Dead Rise is the fifth instalment to Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead franchise. It stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan as sisters Ellie and Beth whose tension-filled reunion turns into a bloody mess when Ellie gets possessed by an evil demon.

The movie is Rated R21 and thus far, has been a crowd-pleaser for horror fans. Although the movie has received a ‘B’ Cinema Score grade and a 68% score from critics on Metacritic, it benefits greatly from positive word-of-mouth.

A US$41 million global opening is a success for Evil Dead Rise. In Evil Dead fashion, the movie worked off a mere budget of US$19 million. More impressively, the movie is contending with two horror releases – Renfield starring Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult and Russel Crowe’s The Pope Exorcist.

Despite the successful debut for the title, Evil Dead Rise still can’t top current top-scorer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The movie debuted with US$368M  globally, making it the biggest opening for an animated film ever. The Super Mario Bros Movie then rode to US$678 million during its second weekend. At its third weekend, the movie has amassed US$872 million globally.
