Sony And Netflix Expands Ghostbusters Universe With Animated Movie

Prepare for another ghost-busting adventure, as Sony Animation and Netflix are expanding the Ghostbusters universe with an upcoming animated film to coincide with the previously announced animated series.

As reported by Deadline, although the project is still in early development, Kris Pearn, best known for his work on 2013’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and 2020’s The Willoughbys, is set to direct the film. Its plot and casting details, however, are still being kept under wraps.

The film joins the ever-expanding Ghostbusters universe, following the live-action movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Together with the upcoming Netflix series helmed by executive producers Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) and Gil Kenan (Monster House), they mark a nostalgia-filled return to the franchise, especially for fans of the 90s series The Real Ghostbusters.

Tracing its roots back to 1984, the Ghostbusters franchise has seen four main-line live-action movies to date, alongside a failed reboot in 2016. In addition, it also spawned two television spin-offs, The Real Ghostbusters which ran for seven seasons between 1986 and 1991, and Extreme Ghostbusters, which ran for a single season in 1997.

The two upcoming animated projects, alongside Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan’s recent tease of more sequels to come, paint a haunting picture for the franchise’s future, in a good way, of course.
