Six seasons and a movie, so goes the viral phrase from the television sitcom Community. And with the series already receiving and completing its six-season run from 2009 to 2015, all eyes are on the latter half of that promise. Now, Donald Glover, who plays Troy Barnes in the show, has come forward to drop an exciting update on the Community movie, claiming that it’s still happening and might launch sooner than fans expect.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the 42-year-old actor and former musician under the name Childish Gambino said that the gears are already turning on the Community movie. “We’re working on it right now,” Glover explained. “I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon.”
Glover also added that he had been discussing the movie with his fellow Community stars, stating that they were “on the text chain talking about it,” so hopefully this means that the entire gang will be on board when the movie eventually releases.
The Community movie was officially ordered by Peacock back in 2022, and is set to see the return of series stars Joel McHale (Jeff Winger), Alison Brie (Annie Edison), Danny Pudi (Abed Nadir), Gillian Jacobs (Britta Perry), Jim Rash (Dean Craig Pelton) and Ken Jeong (Ben Chang). Yvette Nicole Brown, who played Shirley Bennett for the show’s first five seasons, is also set to return, with the movie’s script being reworked in 2024 to include the character.

The movie will be penned by Dan Harmon, who created the original series, alongside former show writer Andrew Guest. Following news of its production, the movie was hit with multiple delays, with the busy schedules of both Glover and McHale cited as its cause.
Released in 2009, the Community series follows a dysfunctional group of students at a community college in the fictional Colorado town of Greendale, with the sitcom resonating with audiences thanks to its use of meta-humour and pop culture references, which paid homage to film and television clichés and tropes. With the movie apparently on the horizon, let’s hope it pays tribute to these very aspects that made the original sitcom so memorable and give the Greendale crew the sendoff they deserve.
