Featuring a fresh take of the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the first trailer gives us a look at the Prime Video series Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1, with Donald Glover (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Maya Erskine (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Man Seeking Woman) taking center stage.
The two will be taking on the iconic spy couple, which was played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the 2005 movie. Instead of following the premise of the original film, the series will feature the two spies working for the same agency, while posing as a married couple. The official description of the series is as follows:
“Meet The Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their lives and identities to be thrown together as partners – both in espionage and in marriage.”
All eight episodes are set to premiere on Prime Video on 2nd February 2024. Glover will be serving as both lead actor and producer, which adds another project to his Prime Video repertoire following the success of satirical comedy horror series Swarm. Francesca Sloane has co-created Mr. and Mrs. Smith alongside Glover.
The first two episodes will be directed by Hiro Murai, who has previously collaborated with Glover on Guava Island and the music video for This is America. Other actors starring in this series include Parker Posey (Mascots), Wagner Moura (The Gray Man), Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You), John Turturro (The Plot Against America), and Paul Dano (The Fabelmans).
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) was initially casted as Jane Smith, but left the project due to creative differences with Glover. Erskine was then officially confirmed to take on the role in 2021. Erskine is also known for creating, writing, producing and starring in comedy series PEN15.
