Alex Garland’s Civil War had some tough competition at the weekend box office to beat from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, but the film achieved victory, pulling ahead with a strong US$25.7 million domestic opening. This also marks a significant milestone for studio A24, making history with its biggest opening to date.
Civil War sets the stage for a divided America embroiled in conflict, as war journalists brave the conflict to secure an interview with the President. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire has plenty of fun kaiju clashes with action galore, and movie-goers are in for a visual treat at the cinema.
But Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire refuses to go down without a fight, and despite coming in second with a weekend total of US$15.4 million, the kaiju film still stays on top with its combined global revenue of US$194 million in just its opening weekend alone.
