Denis Villeneuve To Direct Third ‘Dune’ Movie

After Dune: Part Two’s triumphant showing at the box office with a US$178.5 million global debut, a third Dune movie is confirmed, just as director Denis Villeneuve dreamed of. Dune: Messiah was rumored to be in the works after composer Hans Zimmer was revealed to have been working on the film’s soundtrack, and Villeneuve expressed his enthusiasm for a third film.

Dune: Messiah will likely be the last Dune instalment from Villeneuve in the near future, and the director is looking to take a break for some time before working on the film. The screenplay for the third movie has already been written, but will likely go through some revisions as early development begins. Legendary Pictures confirmed that Dune: Messiah was in development, and will adapt the second book in the Dune series by author Frank Herbert.

There’s still plenty of source material to create more movies with, but Villeneuve is satisfied with his trilogy. He’s also in talks to produce or direct a potential new project on the horizon, Annie Jacobsen’s Pulitzer Prize finalist novel Nuclear War: A Scenario which “explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made.”
