Ahead of Dune: Part Two‘s release, director Denis Villeneuve revealed that a third film would be the end of a trilogy despite more source material available, if Dune: Messiah gets greenlit by Warner Bros.
The news will mean some Dune books will not get adapted, which the movies are based on, so fans looking forward to see Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune might have to wait a little longer for the franchise to get a reboot.
“Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me,” Villeneuve said in an interview with Time, following his announcement last December that a screenplay for the third movie was almost finished. Dune stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya expressed interest in returning for Dune: Messiah, with Chalamet saying, “If the time and opportunity comes to complete the story with ‘Messiah,’ I think we’re all super enthusiastic about that.”
Villenuve, however, expressed fatigue with making two Dune movies back-to-back, and has expressed that he needs some breathing room before making another Dune movie, after spending six years on Part One and Part Two.
Here’s to hoping that we see the potential Dune trilogy have a worthy ending, with further developments expected as Part Two releases in theatres on 29 February 2024.
