‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Was Almost Shelved, But Hugh Jackman Saved The Movie

One phone call dramatically altered the course of the development of Deadpool & Wolverine, and it’s a story Hugh Jackman has told plenty of times, but director Shawn Levy and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds have as much to say about that call, which put the movie back on track.

The duo had struggled for months to come up with an idea for the movie, telling Vanity Fair that “we frankly struggled to find a story that felt original and non-derivative of the other two Deadpool movies. It had to be deserving of the first Deadpool entry into the MCU.

They would’ve scrapped the idea, if not for Jackman’s phone call. “Literally, I thought: Deadpool-Wolverine. I want to do that movie. That’s what I want,” Jackman recalls, “Everything felt new and fresh to me, and I’d be sharing it with Ryan and Shawn, who are two of my best friends.”

While Marvel executive Kevin Feige advised Jackman not to return to the MCU as Wolverine after Logan’s release seemingly concluded the character’s story, he soon changed his mind after hearing the trio out. “This is a one-in-a-billion chance. I really feel like this is what we’ve been looking for,’” said Reynolds, and the rest was history.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theatres on 25 July in Singapore and 26 July in the US.
