After two failed attempts, Blizzard is reportedly trying their hand again at developing a shooter set in the world of Starcraft, this time with former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay at the helm.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who spoke with IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, revealed that “the project, as far as [he] knows is in development, or at least as of the time that [he] wrote [his] book.”
Schreier’s book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, covers the history of the California-based video game developer and publisher. In it, Hay’s upcoming Starcraft shooter receives a mention, and according to Schreier, “was an interesting and useful nugget to include because it really just shows you that Blizzard cannot quit StarCraft shooters.”
The statement references Blizzard’s tumultuous history with StarCraft shooters, as part of an effort to expand the franchise beyond its real-time strategy (RTS) roots. Their first attempt, Starcraft Ghost, was announced in 2002 and set to be a tactical shooter for consoles but was cancelled in 2006 after multiple delays.
Their second attempt, this time under the code name Ares, was cancelled in 2019. The title was reportedly a shooter following the veins of Battlefield but was dropped to focus on then-upcoming titles Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4.
No further details of the title have been revealed as of yet, but here’s hoping it will be third time’s the charm for Blizzard, and players can finally experience the world of StarCraft from an all-new perspective.
