‘Escape From New York’ Reboot & ‘Paddington’ Sequel In The Works At StudioCanal

French film and television production company StudioCanal has unveiled the projects in its pipeline at CinemaCon, with an Escape From New York reboot and a Paddington sequel among the many projects it has in the works.

Marking the first major event at the movie convention in Las Vegas, StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh took to the stage to present the studio’s upcoming works, headlined by a reimagining of John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic, Escape From New York. While no further details on the reboot’s plot or cast were announced, the studio will be partnering with The Picture Company for this new take.

The original film starred Kurt Russell (The Thing) as ex-soldier turned convict Snake Plissken, who will be granted a pardon if he can rescue the President of the United States from a walled-off Manhattan Island maximum security prison within 24 hours. The film was made on a budget of just US$6 million, but would go on to gross over US$50 million at the box office, becoming a cult classic in the process. The movie would go on to receive a sequel, Escape from L.A., in 1996, which saw Russel reprising his role, although the film was a critical and commercial failure.

StudioCanal’s next announcement was that a fourth Paddington movie was in the works, noting that “world-renowned comedy writers” were hired to pen its screenplay, with no further information provided. Based on the children’s series by author Michael Bond, Paddington centres on a lovable bear with a fondness for marmalade, and has seen three films since 2014, with the latest being 2024’s Paddington in Peru. The film trio were developed and financed by StudioCanal, garnering a combined total of US$730 million at the global box office.
