‘Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag’ Remake, ‘Resynced’, Is Finally Sailing To Reality

An Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake will likely be one of Ubisoft’s worst-kept secrets in recent history, and the cat is finally out of the bag…uh, flag. Following a not-so-subtle tease by game protagonist Edward Kenway’s voice actor, Matt Ryan, the studio has unveiled the first piece of concept art for Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, confirming its existence.

The image was included in a blog post detailing the future of the franchise, including progress on various projects, such as the multiplayer-focused Codename Invictus, Netflix’s live-action series helmed by Chernobyl‘s John Renck, and Codename Hexe, the next all-new entry in the franchise.

“Speculation around Assassin’s Creed is not new, but it’s worth repeating: ‘Nothing is true. Everything is permitted,'” reads the update. “Well, except in this case, some whispers have a little more wind in their sails. Keep your spyglass on the horizon.”

While no other official information was shared, previous rumours have suggested that the project will be a substantial remake, featuring gameplay elements and visual fidelity comparable with last year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which is moving into its final phase of support. Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced will also reportedly add new story content to flesh out Edward’s life, but at the cost of removing the modern-day sections.

There’s no word on when the remake is expected to set sail, either, though Ubisoft mentioned a previously unannounced title was slated for release by the end of the coming fiscal year, which falls on 31 March 2027. Released in 2013, the original sea-faring adventure follows Edward, the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton / Connor and father of antagonist Haytham Kenway, as he searches for fortune and a mythical location called the Observatory, sought by both the Assassins and the Templars.
