Scooby-Doo, where are you? Now that Netflix has gathered the Mystery Inc. crew, cameras are rolling on its upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo: Origins series, but a familiar face is noticeably missing in a new first-look image released by the streamer: the beloved Great Dane himself.
In it, the sleuthing team of Daphne, played by Mckenna Grace, Shaggy (Tanner Hagen), Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson), and Fred (Maxwell Jenkins) is seen peeking out from behind a wooden door bearing a paw print. The casting for Scooby remains under wraps, and while Black Bird star Paul Walter Hauser, who was previously announced as a series regular, is widely believed to play the character, Variety reports that he will instead be the dog’s owner.
“During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder,” the logline reads. “Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
The eight-episode outing is described as a modern reimagining of the long-running cartoon, with Toby Haynes (Doctor Who, Black Mirror) executive producing and directing the pilot episodes. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, alongside André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under their Midnight Radio banner, as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions.

No release date has been set for Scooby-Doo: Origins, which marks the first live-action series in the franchise’s history. Previously, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini brought the Mystery Inc. crew to the silver screen in the 2002 film and its sequel, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed.
