Prime Video’s Mass Effect TV adaptation is warping towards uncharted territory, as the head of Amazon TV has reportedly requested rewrites for the series to make it more appealing to non-gamers.

This comes via a report by The Ankler, which outlined why the series, which was first announced in November 2024, was taking so long. According to the article, Peter Friedlander, who was appointed Amazon MGM Studios Head of Global TV in October 2025, had requested to read the scripts of the many in-development projects at the studio, including the Mass Effect series. Friedlander had apparently requested rewrites for Mass Effect to make it “more appealing to non-gamers”, with the show being described as being “on the verge” of a series order.
So what does this mean for the Mass Effect series? It’s too early to tell at this point, but it does seem like the adaptation is straying further and further away from its source material, which is always tricky to pull off. Furthermore, with a game like Mass Effect that emphasises player choice and how decisions affect the narrative’s outcome, turning that experience into a linear one is already challenging enough without shaking things up or potentially adding themes and ideas that might turn game fans away.
That’s not to say that Prime Video hasn’t had success in injecting original ideas into well-established gaming IPs, as it recently struck gold with its Fallout series, which introduced new characters and narratives while still maintaining the game’s lore. Perhaps Mass Effect is looking to replicate just that, and making it “appealing to non-gamers” just means that the studio is straying away from any references to the original gaming trilogy, but only time will tell.

One thing’s for sure, though, the Mass Effect series will not follow Commander Shepard’s storyline, as franchise lead Mike Gamble had previously shared that the show will “explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy”, meaning don’t expect an appearance for fan-favourite characters like Garrus or Liara.
No matter how the show turns out, disappointment or otherwise, at least fans can look forward to the franchise’s next gaming entry, Mass Effect 5, which is steadily being developed at BioWare. The sequel will be set hundreds of years after the events of the original trilogy, with its one and only trailer showcasing the return of Liara.
