10 Questions We Have After Watching ‘The Flash’

DC’s big multiversal superhero flick The Flash is finally here and we’ve done our due diligence of zooming to the cinemas to catch all the humour, heart and action!

Between Michael Keaton’s return as  Batman, Ezra Miller’s quirks as Flash/Barry Allen and the debut of Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, there’s plenty to look forward to – and also question – in this 2 hour and 35 mins movie. It goes without saying that you can expect minor spoilers ahead, so slow down and read when you’re ready to.

Here goes – here are 10 questions we have after watching The Flash.

If Flash can run to Gotham City, why can’t he run to Russia or to anywhere else in the world?

the flash

In the earlier part of the movie, Flash/Barry received a call from Alfred (Jeremy Irons) to help Batman (Ben Affleck) in Gotham City. Barry reluctantly left his plans and ran all the way to Gotham. Seeing how he’s fast enough to be his own mode of transport, why did the two Barrys need Batman’s (Keaton) plane to get to Russia? Can’t one Barry carry the other Barry and run to the country? Seems like it would be a lot faster than waiting around to change Batman’s mind about helping and then fly the vehicle over.

How fast is the Flash?

the flash

In Justice League, the Flash zips by Superman after his resurrection but is spotted by Kal-El, who moves faster and is able to stop Barry.

Yet, Barry can run fast enough to break the time barrier! Does it mean that Henry Cavill’s Superman can also run fast enough to change the timeline so that he is brought back to the new DC Studios?

Are we ever going to see Sasha Calle’s Supergirl again?

the flash

Speaking about being alive, Sasha Calle made her debut, only to die in the movie’s final moments. Frankly speaking, we were crushed when Supergirl was killed because we felt like there was so much potential for the character. Also, why make a big deal and debut a character only to kill them after? We understand that it’s the multiverse so Calle’s Supergirl can appear again in future movies but still! What a disservice to the character.

How does Multiverse Flash gain control of his powers so quickly?

Multiverse Flash is a lot more immature and isn’t as bright as DCU’s Flash After all, he’s only 18 and can’t even comb his hair or do his own laundry, but somehow he’s able to learn all the tricks and master the powers that DCU Flash took 10 years to learn. Maybe Multiverse Flash is much stronger than DCU Flash, and that’s a pretty interesting route to go because it makes us wonder….

How many Multiverse Flash are there?

the flash

We saw in the film’s climax that there are many universes that exist. We saw Christopher Reeves and Nicolas Cage’s Superman in the other universe, but in that universe, Superman didn’t even make it out alive as an infant. And of course, we know DCU has a Superman too. As for Batman, we know that every universe explored in the movie has one. So how many Flashes are there then and how strong are they? Does a Flash exist in every universe and if not, what then happens to Barry Allen?

Nicolas Cage is Superman… huh?

Following up on our previous question, some folks are likely stunned and flabbergasted to see Cage wear the blue suit and red cape. This may come to a surprise but donkey years ago, Tim Burton wanted to make his own Superman movie with Cage in the lead role. The movie got canned and Cage never got to play a DC hero, but since this is a multiversal movie, why not explore and see what Cage might actually be like if he became the last son of Krypton?

Where are the heroes from the Arrowverse?

the flash

In the third action as the multiverse is imploding, we see different realms of Hypertine and catch Christopher Reece and Helen Slater as Superman and Supergirl from the first modern Superman film franchise; Nicholas Cage as Superman from the cancelled Superman Lives movie, and Adam West’s TV Batman.

There are other DC Comics live-action titles, so where are the heroes from the Arrowverse TV universe? What about Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern? Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman?

Why do the Barrys have different lightning colours?

the flash

Orange is the traditional lightning colour for The Flash in the comics as he draws upon the Speed Force for his powers. DCU Flash leaves a trail of orange lightning whenever he runs, but Multiverse Flash’s lightning is a whitish-blue one instead. Why is there a difference of colours between them? The only reasoning we have is that likely one Flash is more powerful and more connected to the speed force than the other – and if we have to take a guess, Multiverse Flash is likely the stronger one.

Which year are we in?

the flash

The Flash didn’t indicate which year DCU Flash got stuck in and to be honest, it’s unclear either. In that universe, the character of Marty McFly was played by Eric Stoltz and not Michael J Fox. While Back to the Future is an 80s movie, it seemed like a much more recent movie in the multiverse – but here’s the kick, everything else seems very modern day. There were no pops of neon in outfits or any other signifier that DCU Barry is stuck in the 80s. The year is kept very ambiguous and we can’t put a finger on it.

Going by this film, events of both Tim Burton Batman movies take place in a separate universe, and can possibly take place in 1989, the year the original Batman movie came out. George Clooney’s Batman was supposed to be a sequel to the earlier Batman films but The Flash indicates that the events of Batman & Robin occur in the new DC Studios universe. Unless George Clooney’s cameo as Bruce Wayne is that of a variant of the one from Batman & Robin, in which case the events from that film didn’t take place in the new DC Studios franchise. Wait what was the question again?

Oh yeah, does it mean Chris O’Donnell and Alicia Silverstone are still Robin and Batgirl?

Why was Nicolas Cage’s Superman fighting a giant spider?

Our guess is this has got something to do with the cancelled Superman Lives movie that Cage was supposed to star in. In Superman Lives, writer Kevin Smith asked producer Jon Peters to add a giant spider into the script. At the same time, Peters wanted to adapt the Death of Superman comic. So what did they do? Combine both concepts together.

In Superman Lives, Brainiac comes to Earth and teams up with Lex Luthor to block out the sun. Doomsday is then unleashed to wreak havoc. Since the sun is blocked, Superman becomes weaker and Doomsday kills him. So, basically, Brainiac is the giant spider.

BONUS: The post-credits scene with Aquaman established that Jason Momoa is still the King of Atlantis, and Henry Cavil’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman are out. But what about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman 3 Killed DC Studios

Gal Gadot had a brief and flirty cameo as Wonder Woman alongside Ben Affleck’s Batman but the film doesn’t bring her back. It seems to hit many that she’s slated to return since Cavill’s cameo was scrapped but only Momoa is seen in the post-credits. So what gives?
