‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Post Credits Scenes Set Up Thanos-Like Villain Knull For SSU Future

**SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK**

Sony’s Venom films have continuously teased, and subsequently backtracked, any connections to the wider Spider-Man universe and its doing the same with Venom: The Last Dance. The final instalment ostensibly marks the end of Eddie Brock’s tumultuous journey with his alien symbiote but Sony clearly wants more, even if the first two outings have been nothing but extended teases that have amounted to nothing.

Starring Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Eddie Brock, this film has been promoted as the final act in a trilogy that, while commercially successful, has received a lukewarm critical response. Despite the film’s subtitle suggesting a definitive conclusion, it adheres to a familiar trope in superhero cinema, by concluding with post-credits scenes that hint at further adventures, seemingly luring fans with the prospect of another chapter.

The mid and post-credits scenes in Venom: The Last Dance subtly suggest that the Venom saga might continue, echoing a common pattern in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) where the finality of a story often leaves room for expansion.

The plot of Venom: The Last Dance sees Brock and Venom on the run through the Nevada desert, pursued by both a government agency led by Commander Rex Strickland, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and a monstrous Xenophage – a creature dispatched by the ancient villain Knull to capture Venom. Knull, portrayed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis, is depicted as a primordial force of evil who created the symbiotes and now seeks to reclaim their power. The climactic battle unfolds in Area 51, culminating in a series of events that suggest both an end and a new beginning for the titular character.

The film’s mid-credits scene introduces audiences to Knull in greater detail. Positioned on his throne, frozen and hunched over the Necrosword, he declares his looming threat over the cosmos following Venom’s apparent defeat. “Your champion has fallen,” Knull says. “Your planet will be mine. The King in Black is awake. I will kill your world. Everyone will burn, and you will watch.” This scene – similar to Thanos’ entrance in The Avengers (2012) post credits – is designed to stir anticipation, laying the groundwork for Knull’s potential emergence as a formidable antagonist in future narratives.

But where? Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films have skirted mention of Venom and looks to be doing its own thing, and it’s not as if the abysmal Madame Web (2024) can carry the torch.

However, it’s the final post-credits scene in Venom: The Last Dance that adds a quirky twist to the tale. Earlier in the film, a comedic mishap at a Mexican bar results in Eddie and Venom inadvertently leaving behind a trace of the symbiote. This scene revisits Cristo Fernández’s bartender who discovers the symbiote residue, highlighting the unintended consequences of Venom’s interactions with ordinary people. As the bartender stumbles out of the wreckage of Area 51, a cockroach scurries towards the symbiote sample, suggesting that Venom’s essence might have found a new host, symbolising the character’s enduring presence on Earth.

The reliance on post-credits scenes to hint at future movies has become a staple in the genre, keeping audiences engaged and discussing potential developments long after the credits roll. However, this technique can be a double-edged sword. While these scenes generate excitement and speculation, they can also lead to frustration if the promised storylines fail to materialise. This has been a recurring issue in both Sony and Marvel films, where enticing teases haven’t always led to satisfying resolutions, leaving audiences feeling disappointed and questioning the purpose of these dangling plot threads.

Whether these teases will materialise into concrete narratives remains to be seen. The future of Venom, shaped by audience expectations and studio strategies, will determine if the hints dropped in Venom: The Last Dance will evolve into a new dance altogether.
