Upcoming ‘Portal’ Update Adds Stunning Ray Tracing To Puzzle Nirvana For Free

Sometimes, the classics can be made better with the help of modern technology, and in the case of Portal, that step is adding ray tracing to the mix. Revealed as part of the GeForce Beyond event, NVIDIA showed off Portal with RTX, a free upcoming update that will introduce full ray tracing to the puzzle platformer.

Set for an unspecified November release as free DLC on Steam, players will be able to enjoy the excellent puzzle game while marvelling at the wonders of technology, which is ironic considering the role of GLaDOS in the game. However, that’s not all.

As shared by NVIDIA, this RTX upgrade builds upon its work on Quake II and Minecraft, and the tool used to make Portal with RTX will be released for free, allowing users to give the RTX treatment to other classic games.

This innovation is called NVIDIA RTX Remix, a modding platform that can add ray tracing with just a few clicks, and gives modders the tools to make ambitious remasters, even for games that were previously unmoddable. After importing a game, users can use AI to enhance materials, build custom assets using Omniverse, and export an RTX Mod complete with ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 3, and NVIDIA Reflex.

The original Portal with no ray tracing/RTX

The potential is huge, especially for the modding scene, but just like Portal with RTX, we will have to wait until the RTX Remix tool becomes available in the future.
