Charlie Cox Says Tom Hiddleston Was Up To Direct ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Episode Before Creative Overhaul

In an amusing turn of events and a true Marvel What If… moment come to life, Daredevil star Charlie Cox has revealed that Tom Hiddleston (Loki) was initially tapped to direct an episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, before the show would go on to receive a creative overhaul down the line.

Speaking during an interview with Happy Sad Confused, Cox explained that Hiddleston was on track to direct one episode of Season 1’s latter half before plans were eventually changed. “The first season of Born Again, before the strike, was going to be 18 episodes. Tom was going to direct one of the episodes,” he said. “One of the great losses on the back half of that original season. Even though the changes that were made to that show were needed, necessary, and made it much better, but he was going to direct episode 12 or something.” Cox also went on to add that he and Hiddleston were already collaborating on ideas before the creative overhaul.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, which was released in March 2025, was initially planned to comprise 18 episodes, and would have forgoed appearances from familiar characters seen in the original Netflix Daredevil series, such as Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), in favour of a new cast. This direction would change when Marvel let go of its initial writers and directors as part of an overhaul, leading to showrunner Dario Scardapane stepping in and reworking many aspects of the first season.

It seems this rework also axed Hiddleston’s debut as director, as the actor had only previously dipped his toes in producing both the Loki series and the 2016 thriller series The Night Manager. It’s certainly a shame, as it would have been interesting to see his unique directorial perspective as an actor, especially since we have seen some actors in the past who have gone on to become acclaimed directors, such as Taika Waititi and James Gunn.

While unfortunate, at least this creative overhaul gave rise to the return of fan-favourite characters, and led to Scardapane and his team taking over completely for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, which has been better received overall, so all’s well that ends well. Hiddleston, on the other hand, is set to return once more as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to launch this year on 18 December.
