Ubisoft’s ‘Star Wars Outlaws’ Is Franchise’s First Open-World Game And It Looks Stunning

It’s been a long time coming, but the highly-anticipated Star Wars Outlaws has finally been announced. A new trailer revealed during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase offered a glimpse of what’s to come, and boy, let’s just say fans are in for an absolute treat.

While no gameplay was shown, it seems Massive Entertainment’s upcoming title is focusing more on the characters and their stories in a galaxy far, far away, with Lucasfilm Games vice-president Douglas Reilly promising “an action-adventure story filled with characters and planets both new and well-known to the Star Wars galaxy.” There will also be spaceships, blasters, and clone troopers, as well as an open-world setting.

“Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars game, set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi,” reads the video’s description on YouTube. “Explore distinct planets across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.”

Star Wars Outlaws

It’s interesting how Ubisoft is billing Star Wars Outlaws as the first open-world game in the franchise, because many past Star Wars entries, including the recently released Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, feature open-world elements in some capacity. The scale of the world and extent of exploration remains unclear, and we’ll have to wait till the publisher’s Ubisoft Forward event, taking place on 12 June, 10am PDT (13 June, 1am for those in Singapore) for more details and a first look at gameplay.

In any case, Star Wars Outlaws is looking plenty incredible, and the gameplay showcase should prove to be an exciting affair. The galactic adventure will release sometime in 2024.
