‘Game of Thrones’ MMORPG Reportedly Coming From South Korean Game Publisher Nexon

A new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones is reportedly in development, with South Korean publisher Nexon at the helm. According to Redanian Intelligence, the game will be set midway through the TV series, between Seasons 4 and 5, and will focus on the North and the Wall.

Players can expect to encounter familiar characters such as Warden of the North Roose Bolton, Jon Snow, and Sam Tarly, but the original cast from the HBO series will not be reprising their roles. The game promises a story mode integrated into an online experience, allowing players to interact with each other as they explore the world of Westeros.

Details about the playable character are still emerging, but reports indicate that players can choose to create either a male or female avatar, with the unchosen option appearing as a character in the storyline. The game’s narrative will guide players through key locations, including Winterfell and the Wall, reflecting the state of Westeros during the show’s fourth and fifth seasons.

The MMORPG’s gameplay is said to resemble the structure of The Elder Scrolls Online, although no release date has been announced. Nexon, known for its wide portfolio of games, including Dungeon & Fighter, MapleStory, and KartRider, is poised to bring the Game of Thrones universe into the gaming realm in a new way.

Previous attempts at Game of Thrones video game adaptations have struggled, with two projects, including the second season of Telltale’s game and another MMORPG, Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms, being cancelled. Recently, Arya Stark made an appearance in the game MultiVersus, with rumours of fan-favourite Daenerys Targaryen joining the roster, although voice lines associated with her were removed.

While the current project primarily focuses on the North, Redanian Intelligence suggests that other regions of Westeros may feature in the game, offering the potential for players to pledge allegiances to different houses throughout the Seven Kingdoms. Locations such as King’s Landing and characters like Daenerys could make an appearance, expanding the game’s scope.

The upcoming MMORPG offers a new chance for Game of Thrones to find success in the gaming industry, potentially bridging the gap between its acclaimed TV series and the video game realm.
