Tom Holland Teases ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Return To “Old School Filmmaking”

In a recent conversation with Flip Your Wig, a YouTube channel specialising in pop culture and entertainment interviews, Tom Holland shared that the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day would be a “breath of fresh air” for viewers, with its renewed approach rooted in “old school filmmaking”.

“I’m obviously over the moon and so excited,” Holland said of getting back into the superhero suit, “Playing Spider-Man is like hanging out with an old pal. And I think we were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID; we shot the entire film on stages.”

His last appearance as Peter Parker was in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which featured Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange aiding Parker in casting a spell that would erase the public’s knowledge of Spider-Man’s secret identity. However, when things went awry and there began to be incursions from various multiverses that introduced villains from past films, as well as the iconic returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, Parker had to allow the Master of the Mystic Arts to proceed with the spell uninterrupted. This led to Parker’s identity being forgotten by everyone in the world, including his allies and loved ones, leaving him stranded with no access to any resources.

Just as Holland’s Spider-Man looks set to restart from scratch in the upcoming film, it appears that the filmmakers of Spider-Man: Brand New Day will also be going back to their roots in their production approach.

Holland explained, “We’re really gonna lean into that old-school filmmaking and shoot in real locations, which is why we’re starting in Glasgow and we’re gonna use the streets of Glasgow to build this massive set-piece that we’re putting together. So it’s gonna feel like making Spider-Man 1 again. It’s been such a long time since I’ve done it, it’s gonna feel like a breath of fresh air, and I think the fans are going to be over the moon with what we’re putting together.”

Glasgow has previously been used in other movies of the same genre, serving as the filming location for The Batman, Avengers: Infinity War, and Kraven the Hunter. Other returning aspects for this film include director Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as actor Jon Bernthal reprising his role as the Punisher.

Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will also be back in their roles of Michelle Jones-Watson and Ned Leeds, respectively. Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and The Bear actor Liza Colón-Zayas will also join the cast, though their roles have not currently been disclosed.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will swing into theatres on 31 July 2026.
