Tim Burton Bringing Wednesday Addams Live-Action Series To Netflix

Tim Burton is revisiting The Addams Family, and this time he’s putting the spotlight on Wednesday Addams.

The new Netflix live-action series titled Wednesday will explore Wednesday’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy. It will follow the character’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago and of course, navigate new and tangled relationships.

News of The Addams Family live-action series first broke in October 2020 when it was being shopped around to different streamers with Netflix considered the likely winner. Netflix has ordered 8 episodes for the young adult series and has described Wednesday as a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery-comedy.

Tim Burton will be directing the series, making it his first venture into TV directing after releasing cult-favourite movies like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Writing Wednesdays are Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, who will also serve as showrunners.

Created by Charles Addams, The Addams Family first hit TVs back in 1938. It has since received a number of different adaptations, from a live-action TV series to live-action films, and most recently, an animated movie from MGM with a sequel due to release in 2021.

In the past, Wednesday Addams has been played by actresses such as Lisa Loring in the original series, Cindy Henderson and Debi Derryberry in two different animated series, Nicole Fugere in the straight-to-video movie Addams Family Reunion and the then-Fox Family Channel’s The New Addams Family produced in 1998.

No actress is tied to this new Netflix Wednesday series yet.
