Three Kingdoms Martial Arts Horror Comes Alive In Team Ninja’s ‘Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’

While there were certainly plenty of games being shown off at the Microsoft X Bethesda showcase and plenty of other events over the weekend, there are always still surprises that can catch the eye. One of those happens to be Team Ninja‘s next project, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, a game that promises mythological and horror elements with the help of Koei Tecmo.

Led by producers Fumihiko Yasuda (Nioh) and Masaaki Yamagiwa (Bloodborne), the game will take place in an alternate version of the Three Kingdoms period, where the Later Han Dynasty is being plagued by demons. In the middle of it all is the nameless militia soldier we will control, and of course, the threat of man is never too far away, as the unnamed protagonist goes up against other human warriors as well.

Combat is going to be a huge part of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, but the question is whether it will be more akin to the Warriors formula championed by Koei Tecmo, or the more measured Souls-like combat that we have seen in Nioh and the newer Stranger of Paradise. Nevertheless, there will be Chinese martial arts to master and demons and man alike to fend off, so action is a given. And was that the legendary Lu Bu we see right at the end? That will make for an epic boss fight.

The cinematic trailer definitely helps set the mood, but it would be good to see gameplay in action so we know exactly what to expect from this new game. There is still a year and more to go, so hopefully, that will happen in the coming months.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is set to release sometime in 2023 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PCs. It will also come to Game Pass on day one.
