One of the biggest surprises of TGA 2024 was undoubtedly the reveal of CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher IV, and that Ciri will be taking over the reins as its main protagonist. Despite this, the studio has confirmed that Geralt of Rivia, the main hero of all previous games in the series, will be making a return, voiced by the legendary Doug Cockle.
In case you missed it, check out the official cinematic reveal trailer for The Witcher IV:
While the trailer focused mainly on Ciri’s reveal and subsequent battle with a massive, six-armed beast, it does feature a line of dialogue right at the end: “Time for a new saga. See you on the path.” This voice-over, which was only audible in the TGA 2024 debut version of the trailer, sounds very much like Geralt, and according to a confirmation from CD Projekt Red (via IGN), this was indeed the case.
“Geralt will appear in the game, but we don’t want to spoil his role precisely. You’ll have to wait to learn more for now,” teased the studio. Full details might be kept under wraps for now, but franchise and lore designer Cian Maher has revealed how Geralt’s return will fit into the series’ established timeline via an additional interview with IGN ahead of the game’s cinematic reveal.

“Geralt will probably be around for a long time. In Season of Storms (a prequel novel), there is an epilogue. It takes place in Magpie Forest in 1373, 101 years after The Witcher 3,” explained Maher, “And in that epilogue, there is a certain white-haired Witcher hunting a monster who remains unnamed, but who behaves in a certain way. And obviously he has white hair. I think we can expect Geralt to be around for a long time. The capacity in which he does is… we’ll see. But I don’t think he’s going anywhere.”
This confirms previous rumours sparked by a comment Cockle made on his character’s return back in August this year. “I can’t say anything about it,” the actor said, “What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don’t know how much, and the game won’t focus on Geralt. So it’s not about him this time.” Following this, Cockle admitted that he had gotten into a bit of trouble with CD Projekt Red for his comments, and subsequently retracted his statement.
In any case, with the latest confirmation of Geralt’s return, it would be interesting to see how the character will be woven into the game’s plot, or how big of a role he would actually play. Since the title currently doesn’t have a firm release window, fans might need to wait quite a while for any further details to be revealed.
