‘The Walking Dead’ Still Has Unexplored Continents Even After 15 Years On TV

It won’t be the end of the walkers and survivors just yet, as there’s plenty of life left in the Walking Dead universe. After spawning multiple seasons and spin-offs on the small screen, its future still leaves room for more worldbuilding prospects, and the most recent offshoot series, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, is one such example.

Centred on Norman Reedus’ iconic character, it features France — the origin of the zombie virus — as the central setting following the conclusion of the original show, which itself is based on the graphic novel series by Robert Kirkman.

“It’s quite possible that we could see this group up here 15 years from now,” said executive producer Scott Gimple to Variety during an anniversary event at Mipcom, Cannes. “There are many more continents to visit. It’s about how [the characters] evolve over time. It’s really exciting to see how far we can take this.”

Comparing the franchise’s storytelling possibilities to the trove of stories and characters in the DC and Marvel film empire, he added, “It was all one story. It went in all sorts of different directions. Even with characters who have done so many things, we can put them in different worlds where they have different challenges and evolve them through these challenges.”

The original Walking Dead series ran for 11 seasons from 2010 to 2022, before concluding with 177 episodes. It has spawned six spin-off projects to date, including 2023’s Daryl Dixon, which was renewed for a penultimate fourth season, scheduled to air sometime next year.
